1900-1909

For this project, ‘Decades’, I was given the years 1900-1909. This I will research into the main movements that happened in these 9 years.
In general a lot happened in this decade such as Photography being available to the public, the invention of the First electric typewriter, the Blickensderfer, the comic book, the Wizard of Oz was published and animation was introduced.
Cubism was apart of this decade, it was only in 1908 that it really begun to be a movement in art, the main movement of this era was Art Nouveau.
Art Nouveau is a style of art, architecture and design which mainly lasted from 1880-1914. It’s style is somewhat ‘flowing’ and uses a lot of curved lines.

An architect designer, Arthur Mackmurdo designed a book cover which was published in 1883, the cover has a look of free-flowing designs. In architecture however the broad use of exposed iron and large, irregularly shaped pieces of glass were used often.
At this time Art Nouveau also took the form of advertisements, posters, labels, magazines, glass making and jewellery.
Louis Comfort Tiffany, an artist and designer from around this era, worked in the decorative arts and is best known for his work in
stained glass. He started off a business, which in 1902 became known as the Tiffany Studios.
Another artist at this time was Alfons Mucha. Mucha produced paintings, posters, advertisements, and book illustrations, as well as designs for jewellery, carpets, wallpaper, and theatre sets. His work featured beautiful healthy young women often surrounded by flowers.
